77 illegal miners(zama-zamas) rescued and apprehended in Orkney
North-West: Dr. Kenneth Kaunda of the District illicit Mining team, Orkney Visible Policing and Detectives, and the Mining rescue Team helped rescue and apprehended 77 illegal miners between 14 and 18 April 2022.
The rescue mission comes as the illegal miners requested assistance from the mine management to get out of the mine shaft as they were starving.
It is also said that 4 decomposed bodies were also brought up by the miners on the 15th of April 2022.
It is also said that 60 of the illegal miners are from Lesotho, 13 are from Mozambique and four are of Zimbabwean nationality, the dead bodies are still under identity investigation.
The miners are to appear before the Orkney Magistrate court, after being charged with trespassing, illegal mining, and contravention of Section 49(a) of the Immigration Act, 2002(Act No. 13 of 2002).
