Former lawyer arrested for theft of road accidents funds. -Mpumalanga
37-years-old Excellent Vukani Mthembu, a former lawyer who used to be a practitioner at Vukani Attorneys Nelspruit Mbombela was arrested by Hawk’s Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team based in Nelspruit on Friday, 19 March 2022 for theft of trust funds.
Excellent Vukani Mthembu is said to had been appointed by his clients at Nelspruit and said to have submitted claims on their behalf to the Road Accident Fund, Master of High Courts and Estate Office. Upon receiving payment, he allegedly pocketed the money and the money of the lawsuit after a client approached him to approach a private investigator to conduct a private investigation for her on her behalf. She is said to have paid the money into the lawyer’s trust account. The accused stole the amount of R981 452-54 actual loss whilst claims to the total value of R1300 000-00 potential loss was stopped by the Fidelity Fund.
The accused was arrested but later released on R5000.00 bail with the case being postponed to 6 April 2022 at the Specialised Commercial Crimes Courts.
